Identity has always been a complex topic for me. Since moving to America, I have always had a sense of unbelonging. My family roots are in India, but I was born in England, and moved to the US in Junior High. I can speak Mandarin fluently but my Punjabi is at a child's level. When people ask where I'm from, I always feel unsure what they're asking. Are they asking why my accent is a bit odd, what part of the world my brown skin comes from, or where I live in currently? Last year, I was lucky enough to receive the Funds for Artists grant from the Greater Columbus Arts Council. These grants are dedicated to helping artists in the Columbus area to make improvements to their careers, or get the funding necessary to create new work and try something different without having to absorb all the costs by themselves. I recently had the opportunity at my part time job to jury an art exhibition for the Carnegie Gallery at Main Library! There was such an amazing selection of work, and I was honored to be part of the process of curating the show. You can see me being interviewed about the jurying process here! You may already know that SquidCat, Ink began as a challenge to draw every day for an entire year in 2015, but did you know that I first started doing daily drawing challenges (albeit for a month at a time, rather than a year) over a decade ago?! ⁠More often than not, that has taken the form of participating in Inktober, a month long challenge to draw something every day in October according to a set prompt list. ⁠Here is the round up of what I made in 2023!
